We are a family-owned business based in Cape Town, manufacturing an extensive range of paper and board packaging, with a particular focus on paper carrier bags and self-folding boxes. With more than 30 years of experience, we’ve built a reputation for producing quality, innovative packaging solutions tailored to our customers’ needs.

What We Do

We specialise in short to medium production runs, carving out a niche where flexibility, creativity, and personal service matter most. While we don’t try to compete with large-scale manufacturers, we pride ourselves on offering something they often can’t — attention to detail and genuine partnership.

Our custom manufacturing works seamlessly alongside our off-the-shelf range, allowing us to cater even for very small quantities.

Our Story

Merrypak’s journey began in 1985, when Madeline and Mike Pate purchased a tiny printing works at the top end of Cape Town CBD. The business had just two machines — one of which was used to keep the other running — and a team of two employees.

A year later, their daughter Julie joined the business, starting out by filing and answering phones. As the company grew, so did the need to adapt. With the rise of quick-print shops and home computing, it became clear that traditional small-scale printing was changing.

That shift led to a defining moment: Merrypak began manufacturing hand-folded carrier bags and boxes, laying the foundation for the business you see today. Julie’s husband, Mervyn Tobiansky, joined to run the factory, and together they helped steer the company into its next phase.

Growth followed, and the factory moved to Ndabeni. In 1995, a small factory shop was opened to sell overruns and spoils — a humble beginning for what would become a thriving retail space.

Today, Merrypak employs 150 staff and operates from two buildings in Ndabeni. One houses our production facilities, while the other is home to our retail store, Merrypak Print & Copy, and the Good Food Café.

More Than Manufacturing

What started as a few bags and boxes on trestle tables has grown into a vibrant retail environment. Our store now offers a wide variety of products including:

• Packets and catering supplies
• Wrapping, ribbon and tags
• Stationery, art and craft materials
• Party supplies and helium filling

We ship many of our products across Southern Africa — making Merrypak a one-stop destination for both businesses and individuals.

Many of our senior team members began their journey on the factory floor, growing into roles across administration, accounts, and management. This culture of development and opportunity is at the heart of who we are.
